A bill to provide health insurance to about 270,000 uninsured Pennsylvanians passed the state House of Representatives and was sent over to the Senate.
The Monday vote was 118 to 81, with Democrats providing most of the support.
The bill would establish the Pennsylvania Access to Basic Care program, covering legal U.S. residents ages 19 to 64 who meet
income guidelines and have gone six months without insurance.
The annual cost is expected to reach $1.1 billion by 2012-13.
The bill also has provisions to help smaller low-wage employers provide health insurance.
